Henry Ford Neurosurgeon and Epilepsy Expert Named President of National Pain Management Advocacy Group
Detroit – Jason M. Schwalb, M.D., A.A.N.S., F.A.C.S., Surgical Director of the Henry Ford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Henry Ford Health System, has been elected President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (AANS/CNS) Joint Section on Pain. Schwalb previously served as the section’s vice president, a position he held since 2015.
The AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pain is a national advocacy group dedicated to advancing the role of neurosurgeons in the education, research, and promotion efforts for multi-disciplinary pain management. “As neurosurgeons, we care for patients who are not only dealing with extremely complex conditions, but, often a great deal of pain as well,” said Schwalb. “Like many of our colleagues, we recognize the responsibility we have to address both and that’s why it’s so critical for us to maintain our voice in this advocacy work.”
Schwalb said the availability of reported pain data, the need for increased collaboration between patients and their entire care team, and the opioid abuse epidemic are just a few of the drivers behind the group’s efforts. “Whether it’s developing new treatments for neurosurgical pain, advancing research, or promoting educational opportunities, we are moving from recommendations to implementations.”
