Biographical Statement
Jonathan P. Braman, MD, MHA, FAOA is a board-certified orthopedic shoulder surgeon who has Advanced Certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. In addition, he is Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Henry Ford Health and Medical Director of the Orthopedic Service Line for Henry Ford Health. He was previously Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where he was Program Director in Orthopedic Surgery and Vice Chair of Faculty Development.
Dr. Braman specializes in the nonoperative and operative treatment of shoulder disorders including fractures, dislocations, arthritis, and rotator cuff tears. He uses arthroscopic and open surgical techniques to provide the best care solutions for each patient’s specific needs. He has extensive experience with revision surgery and patients with complex needs.
Dr. Braman proudly serves as the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the Detroit Tigers and their affiliate teams, delivering expert orthopedic care at the highest level of professional sports.
A native of Seattle, WA, he received an A.B. in English from Princeton University before getting his medical degree and residency training from the University of Washington. He completed his shoulder fellowship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Braman is an accomplished researcher and scholar with an emphasis on education. He is Co-Director of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Course for Orthopedic Educators which helps surgeons be better teachers. He demonstrates his passion for education with a commitment to helping his patients better understand their shoulder problems. In addition, he is involved in training the next generation of orthopedic surgeons and is an active mentor and teacher of surgeons at all levels of training. He believes that surgeons should represent their communities and give back and is a proud resident of the city of Detroit.
Care Philosophy
Dr. Braman is passionate about finding a solution for patients that best meets their expectations and needs. Using state-of-the-art solutions for a patient’s individual situation helps him find collaborative and science-driven answers for each person. Complex patients require solutions which are created for them specifically. In addition, people with any shoulder problem get great care from experts who manage the most difficult problems.
Research Interests
Dr. Braman has won numerous research and educational awards, including the prestigious American British and Canadian Traveling Fellowship (2017) which is given to only five American orthopedic surgeons every two years. He has also lectured nationally and internationally on shoulder injuries, educational topics, and equity. As a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, he continues to contribute new research and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications to date.
