Corrective Reconstruction

If you had a failed breast reconstruction procedure or have developed issues over time, we can help.

The goal of breast reconstruction is to help women restore wholeness after breast cancer surgery. However, if you’ve had a previous reconstruction procedure and didn’t have a good outcome, or if you have since developed problems such as an aging implant, you may be experiencing complications, including:

  • Chronic breast pain or discomfort.
  • Disfigurement, deformity or asymmetry (an imbalance in size and shape of your breasts).
  • Scarring.
  • Capsular contracture (where scar tissue forms around the implant, hardening the breast, making the skin feel tight and possibly changing the shape).
  • Issues with nipple reconstruction, such as a change in the nipple’s position after nipple-sparing mastectomy.
  • Radiation-related effects.

Our corrective reconstruction surgeons are experienced in advanced techniques that can address these and other issues from previous reconstruction procedures. We use proven approaches for the best possible outcomes.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery: What to Know

Quality of Life: An Important Part of Cancer Care

Research shows that patient reported quality of life is linked to survival in people who have cancer.

Types of corrective reconstruction we offer

Your corrective breast reconstruction surgeon will discuss all of your options with you. We recognize that if you’ve already undergone one or more reconstruction surgeries, you may be hesitant to have another one. We consider what’s most important to you and give you all the information, including our treatment recommendations, so you can make an informed decision.

Depending on your specific situation and goals, your corrective breast reconstruction may include:

  • Breast flap procedures: Our corrective reconstruction surgeons are experienced in specialized microsurgery breast flap techniques that use your own tissue for reconstruction without removing any muscle.
  • Implant reconstruction: If you are having issues with an implant, we can remove, replace, resize or upgrade it.
  • Breast reconstruction using your own mastectomy skin (Goldilocks procedure): During this procedure, the skin, fat and blood vessels that remain after your mastectomy are rearranged and used to form a new breast mound. This is done without the need for an implant or flap, and it represents a middle-of-the-road approach to breast reconstruction.
  • Hybrid reconstruction: This advanced surgery combines techniques from both breast flap and implant procedures.
  • Nipple reconstruction and 3D nipple tattoos: If you had a nipple-sparing mastectomy and your nipple moved or now looks unnatural, we offer two corrective breast reconstruction options to restore it—a procedure that rebuilds this tissue and one that uses a tattoo to recreate the appearance of a nipple.
  • Symmetry procedures: When there is an imbalance in the size and shape of your breasts after reconstruction, we offer procedures that help to restore symmetry. These may include a breast lift or reduction, or fat grafting—harvesting fat from another part of the body and injecting it into specific areas to add volume, fill a dimple or groove, or correct a contour deformity in the breast
