Facial Reconstruction

Facial reconstruction surgery blends art and medicine. The oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Henry Ford Health are highly skilled at repairing injury to the facial skeleton, helping to restore form and function.

You may need facial reconstruction after head and neck surgery or if you’ve experienced facial trauma from an accident. In some cases, it is necessary to fix developmental conditions.

Reconstruction after head and neck surgery

Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons collaborate with other Henry Ford specialists to restore function and appearance after head and neck cancer surgery.

Removing head and neck tumors requires complex procedures and a skilled team of specialists. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons work closely with microvascular surgeons during these procedures.

Facial reconstruction may require:

  • Bone grafting, in which surgeons take a piece of healthy bone (often from the leg or hip) and use it to replace shattered bone
  • Tissue transfer, including transplanting healthy muscle or skin to the injured area
  • Microvascular surgery to reconnect delicate blood vessels

Facial trauma reconstruction

Facial trauma includes any injury that results in the fracture of one or more bones in the face. Car accidents, falls and gunshots are the main causes of facial trauma.

We repair these traumatic injuries using advanced bone grafting techniques. With surgical reconstruction, we can help restore your facial function and appearance.
