Senior Support Groups

The DIO offers the largest support group program for visually impaired and blind people in the United States. Our senior support group meetings are held at the DIO, in St. Clair Shores and in Livonia at the Henry Ford Center for Vision Rehabilitation & Research.

A welcoming environment for visually impaired seniors

The DIO senior support groups, serving visually impaired seniors in the Detroit area, provide a comfortable environment to discuss the challenges of living fully with a visual impairment. Each group offers several benefits to members, including:

Senior Support 3A
  • No charge for attending general meetings
  • Guest speakers
  • Small group meetings
  • Occasional day trips and seasonal events
  • Assistance with transportation to meetings, when possible

In addition, individuals may attend the meetings as long as they like. These meetings are characterized by their cheerful, forward-looking, upbeat nature. Many members have been in their group for years, often developing friendships with others in the visually impaired community. All of this is made possible by the Friends of Vision, who serve as volunteers for the events and raise funds to ensure the continued success of these programs.

Adult “Visionaries”

In addition to the senior support groups, the DIO offers a Visionaries support group program for visually impaired or blind adults ages 20-59, which meets once a month at the DIO.
