A Couple Becomes A Family

Kat and Nate with new baby Dex
Not long after Kathleen (Kat) Dieterich and her husband, Nate, were married, they started thinking about having a family. Because they met and married in their thirties, both felt “the clock was ticking” on their timeline for having children.

After two years of trying to conceive, Kat began to worry she might never get pregnant. The couple sought help with reproductive endocrinologist Ahmad Hammoud, MD, and the Henry Ford Center for Reproductive Medicine.

After a review of her medical history and a comprehensive infertility assessment, the couple was diagnosed with “unexplained infertility.” Based on this diagnosis, the medical team provided the couple with a treatment plan, new hope and reassurance.

The first step in their journey to parenthood was an attempt at intrauterine insemination (IUI). Kathleen had high hopes for the procedure, but like pregnancy attempts before, the IUI did not help them conceive.

The couple was disappointed but didn’t give up hope. They continued their pregnancy quest with the help of the Center and Dr. Hammoud, who suggested in vitro fertilization (IVF) as a next step. The couple was overjoyed when their first embryo transfer resulted in a successful pregnancy, and months later, a baby boy whom they named Dex. Their son was a sweet gift for the couple, born a week before their third wedding anniversary.

When the time came to consider expanding their family again, the couple knew they could rely on the same trusted fertility experts at Henry Ford Health. Happily, Dex will soon be promoted to the role of big brother, as the family of three will soon become a gang of four, thanks to another successful round of IVF.
