Education and Innovation

Education Experience

Education is a core part of the Henry Ford Hospital Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship. Fellows teach emergency medicine residents, medical students and other learners across clinical, simulation and course-based settings.

Resident Ultrasound Education

Fellows work closely with emergency medicine residents during bedside scanning, scan shifts, simulation sessions and quality assurance review. The resident curriculum is longitudinal across all three years of emergency medicine training and includes foundational scanning, procedural ultrasound, advanced ultrasound applications and fellowship-level education for senior residents. Medical Student Education

Fellows have opportunities to teach Wayne State University School of Medicine students through a longitudinal ultrasound curriculum that began in 2006. The curriculum provides fellows with experience in curriculum design, course implementation, hands-on teaching, research and innovation in undergraduate medical education.

Simulation and HERALD Lab

Fellows have access to the Henry Ford simulation center and HERALD Lab, including high-fidelity augmented reality ultrasound simulators and virtual reality resources. Within the HERALD lab there are three Vimedix ultrasound simulators that have TEE, TTE, and Transabdominal imaging capabilities, as well as one female Vimedix ultrasound simulator for TVUS and TAUS OB/GYN imaging. Fellows may participate in military medic point-of-care ultrasound courses and other simulation-based education. Fellows will also have access to virtual and augmented reality experiences.

Henry Ford Ultrasound University

Fellows may participate as learners and instructors in Henry Ford Ultrasound University courses, including focused echocardiography courses, point-of-care ultrasound courses, difficult IV access training and physician assistant courses.

Innovation Opportunities

The fellowship offers access to ultrasound innovation activities, state-of-the-art simulation resources and ongoing opportunities to develop new approaches to ultrasound education and clinical care.

Medical Education Track

Fellows have the opportunity to specialize in medical education with a focus during fellowship in expanding their teaching portfolio, residency committee exposure (CCC,CDC,PEC), as well as support to attend internal or external teaching courses.
