Benefits

Salary

Please follow this link to the Graduate Medical Education office to learn more about our competitive salary, as well as just some of the covered benefits Henry Ford residents enjoy.

Moonlighting/call

In addition to the above base salary and benefits, Henry Ford residents have a unique opportunity to supplement their incomes while at the same time training to become independent radiologists. After passing an oral ER radiology examination administered by the Henry Ford faculty in March of the PGY-2 year, residents begin taking in-house call covering evenings and weekends. These shifts are considered internal moonlighting, providing our residents the opportunity to earn extra money. This also provides for greater flexibility in scheduling call shifts. Similar internal moonlighting is available beginning in the PGY-3 year for residents to hone their skills with image-guided procedures during the day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

External moonlighting opportunities are available for PGY-5 residents with residents providing diagnostic imaging interpretation at one of our high volume sister hospitals. In addition to providing additional compensation, these shifts offer an excellent opportunity to learn how to operate in an environment that is similar to a private practice radiology group.

Vacation/Leave

Residents receive a total of 22 days of paid time off per year. Vacation may be taken in increments of half or full days.

Maternity leave currently runs up to six weeks. Three days of paternity leave are also provided.

Conferences

Being a first author on a research project accepted at a national conference allows residents to travel to the conference and receive up to $1500 for registration, travel, lodging and personal expenses associated with the conference.

Senior residents are allowed an additional 5 non-participant days to travel to conferences. Residents are responsible for their own expenses on these trips however.

Professional Development Fund

Discretionary funds are available for residents which can be used to help defray costs associated with USMLE Step 3, books, board preparatory course, or an iPad. Learn more about our professional development fund from the Office of Graduate Medical Education.

All PGY-2 and above residents are provided with complimentary subscriptions to StatDx and RadPrimer qBank (value of $969/year). The popular Prometheus Lionhart board preparation videos have also been purchased for residents as they begin board studying during the R3 year.

The department also pays for the 2 year SIR Residency Essentials curriculum.

AIRP

All R3 (PGY-4) residents attend the Radiologic-Pathologic course held in metro Washington D.C. (Silver Spring, MD). Henry Ford provides up to $1800 to cover travel, lodging, and personal expenses.

Parking

Residents have free access to multiple parking lots located immediately adjacent to the hospital for easy access.

Meals

$500 is provided yearly for radiology residents to buy meals in the Henry Ford cafeteria or at the in-hospital Papa Joe’s market, Subway Restaurant, or Biggby Coffee.

Lounge

A dedicated radiology residency lounge is available and includes tables, sofas, computer workstations, and a large LED television. A large refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker are also located in the lounge. Residents are afforded 30 minutes of dedicated lunch time every day.

Personal lockers are provided right outside the lounge to store personal belongings as needed.

A private, locked room is available for nursing mothers.

Housing

Discounted apartments are available specifically for Henry Ford residents at a complex immediately adjacent to the hospital.

Libraries

The Sladen Library is located on the 17th floor in the clinic building with multiple reading and computer stations. In addition to numerous physical textbooks, residents have 24/7 access through an online portal that allows them to read from just about any major medical journal or reference source, as well as free use of question banks such as Board Vitals.

On the third floor of the clinic building is a dedicated radiology library full of radiology textbooks. Computer workstations are located there as well.
