Interventional Radiology is the use of medical image guidance, such as Computed tomography (CT) scans, Ultrasounds, and X-rays, to perform minimally invasive treatment procedures. Many conditions that once required traditional surgery can now be treated with interventional radiology, thanks to advances in technology and medical knowledge. Our experienced team performs thousands of Interventional Radiology procedures each year.

We provide a wide range of Interventional Radiology procedures. The following is a list of procedures offered.

• Catheter placement for dialysis treatment
• Closure of abnormally enlarged veins with laser energy
• Fluid drainage with CT or ultrasound guidance
• Insertion of a peripherally inserted central catheter, or PICC, line, which allows you to receive medicines and fluids
• Liver intervention, including portal vein procedures to treat high blood pressure in the abdomen
• Percutaneous nephrostomy, which drains urine from the kidney -- including replacing drainage tubes
• Thoracentesis, which uses ultrasound guidance to drain fluid within the chest cavity
• Fine-needle aspiration and biopsies, which use ultrasound guidance to locate and obtain samples to test for various thyroid conditions
• Prostate artery embolization for benign prostatic hyperplasia
• Treatment for aortic dissection, a tear in the wall of the main artery that carries blood from the heart
• Treatment for deep-vein thrombosis, including pulmonary embolism treatment and inferior vena cava (IVC) filter
• Varicocele embolization, or a treatment to relieve a swollen vein in the scrotum
• X-ray-guided procedures for joints (arthrogram) and the back (myelogram)
• Myelogram, which creates images of the spinal canal
• Cancer treatments
• Stroke Care

We perform more than 10,000 procedures per year, including some of the most advanced techniques available. Our Interventional Radiologists have a long history of successful and coordinated care with doctors in other departments providing a team-based approach for our patients.

We’ve achieved several milestones in Interventional Radiology care as part of our commitment to provide the best care possible. We are:

• The first U.S. commercial site to install the new Phillips Allura angio suite with EmboGuide oncology package, which we use to treat tumors that are difficult to reach or tumors in patients who aren’t good candidates for traditional surgery
• The first Interventional Radiology team in Michigan to use the AngioVac® system for catheter-directed thrombolysis (a treatment for deep-vein thrombosis)
• The first Interventional Radiology team in Michigan to use NanoKnife® technology to destroy kidney tumors
