Can you tell me about the ESIR program?

Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) training is completed during a diagnostic radiology residency. It requires at least eight interventional radiology rotations, one ICU rotation, and up to three interventional radiology-related rotations during the R1 (PGY-2) - R4 (PGY-5) years. It also requires at least 500 interventional radiology procedures. Henry Ford has two ESIR positions each year.

Is there a research requirement for residents?

Our Department has a long history of producing quality research and scholarly activity is strongly encouraged throughout the residency. Although the minimum residency research requirement is 1, most of our residents far exceed this number.

  • As first author you can receive up to a $1500 dollar stipend for each national meeting in which you participate.
  • During your training, in addition to participant travel days, you are also given 5 nonparticipant days to attend meetings.

What is the last day for applying to the program?

There is no last day for applying to the program. However, please note that interviews are granted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

When do you send out interview invites?

Interview invitations begin shortly after ERAS opens and continues until all interview positions are filled.

When are interviews conducted?

Late October through mid-January

Can you tell me about call experience?

  • As a resident you work independently creating full preliminary reports on all imaging modalities. After submitting the report, an on-site staff reviews and finalizes your case. The staff are always available to discuss cases.
  • You are eligible for call at the end of your R1 year.
  • We are unique in that non-Night float call is considered internal moonlighting.
  • Shifts include:
    • Weeknights 5-9pm (10 shifts in a 6 month block)
    • Weekend Neuro call 7-3pm (Variable 1-2 per block)
    • Weekend ER shift 7am-9pm (2 per block)
    • Weekend Diagnostic CT 7am-9pm (2 per block)
    • Weekend Body CT procedure call 7-3pm (Variable 1-2 per block)

How does night coverage work?

  • Night hours are from 9 pm-7am
  • First year residents have 1 block/week of night float, third year residents have 3 blocks of night float, and second and fourth year residents have 4 blocks of night float.
  • You are assigned with another resident
  • Submit preliminary reports that are reviewed by onsite staff (no staffing of studies in the morning).

Can you tell me about intern year?

As a categorical program you will do your intern year at Henry Ford.

You will do three radiology rotations and during those months you will act as a radiology resident submitting reports.

  • 5 Floor months (no night coverage)
  • 3 consult months
  • One ER month
