Henry Ford Health Appoints New Chair of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery

DETROIT (July 27, 2023) – Steven S. Chang, M.D., a nationally recognized and respected Henry Ford Health surgeon scientist, has accepted the role of Chair of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, effective July 24, 2023. Most recently, Dr. Chang served as the department’s vice chair, director of Henry Ford Cancer’s Head and Neck Cancer Program and director of the Center for Patient Reported Outcome Measures.

“Dr. Chang is on the cutting edge of researching and treating the full spectrum of head and neck cancers, and in his time here has proven to be an incredible leader,” said Steven Kalkanis, M.D., Henry Ford Health Executive Vice President, CEO of Henry Ford Hospital and CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group. “As Chair of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, he will continue this department’s rise as one of the nation’s premier Otolaryngology practices.”

Dr. Chang was selected after an extensive nationwide search. As chair, he will be responsible for creating and executing plans to advance the department’s clinical, surgical, training and research enterprises. He takes over from Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D., M.S.A., who has spent the last 15 years leading the department.

“Dr. Yaremchuk has created a rock-solid foundation and reputation upon which I know Dr. Chang and the department will build. We thank her for her years of dedication and look forward to having her continue to see patients and remaining a vital member of the team,” Dr. Kalkanis said.

Henry Ford’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, also known as ENT, provides the most advanced treatments for all diseases of the head and neck and offers comprehensive and cutting-edge personalized care. From common to the most complex cases, the Otolaryngology department cares for more than 50,000 outpatients and performs nearly 2,000 head and neck surgeries annually.

A member of Henry Ford’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery since 2013, Dr. Chang received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University and his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and was a Head and Neck Cancer Surgery fellow at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Chang has been the Otolaryngology department’s vice chair since 2021. He’s also been the director of the Head and Neck Cancer Program for Henry Ford Cancer since 2015, and the cancer center’s Medical Director of Quality since 2016. In addition, Dr. Chang has been serving as the director for Henry Ford’s Center for Patient Reported Outcomes Measures, among other leadership roles. He is also an associate clinical professor at both Wayne State School of Medicine and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

Dr. Chang has received numerous awards and recognitions for his clinical care and patient-centered research and has been published dozens of times. He’s on the executive editorial board of The Head and Neck Journal of the Sciences and Specialties of the Head and Neck, is chair of NRG Oncology Head and Neck Cancer Patient Reported Outcomes and Cost Effectiveness Committee and has served on numerous other committees and boards. Dr. Chang is a clinician scientist with a special interest in patient-centered outcomes research, standard-of-care-defining clinical trials that focus on improving survival for head and neck cancer patients and ensuring the very best quality of life possible for patients.
