Genesys Hospital Legally Implements Terms of Proposed Contract for Nurses
GRAND BLANC, Mich. (March 17, 2026) — This week Henry Ford Genesys Hospital began legally implementing additional terms from the proposed contract it’s been negotiating with Teamsters Local 332 leaders – terms that further value nurses’ unique, professional experience; help attract and retain new team members; and ensure high-quality patient care.
This is the second time since Teamsters went on strike at Genesys Hospital in September 2025 that the hospital has legally implemented changes to the wages and benefits provided to its nurses.
The hospital is:
- Increasing wages for registered nurses by up to 13% in 2026, bringing the average nursing salary to well above the state average.
- Implementing new weekend, off-shift, and critical pay rates to ensure additional staff are available when necessary.
- Committed to maintaining the same nurse-to-patient staffing ratios from previous Teamsters Local 332 contracts.
Genesys Hospital leaders formally extended updated proposals containing these terms to Teamsters leaders last month. Teamsters have not yet agreed to the terms because, amongst other things, they’re demanding a return-to-work agreement that would bump permanent Henry Ford Genesys Hospital nurses out of the jobs they’ve filled during the Teamsters’ indefinite strike. This is unfair and illegal. Having met all conditions outlined in collective bargaining laws, the hospital legally began implementing the proposed terms this week.
Genesys Hospital nurses – including newly-hired team members, RNs who have remained on the job through the Teamsters strike, and striking nurses who are welcome to return to work at any time with proper notice – are now eligible for a total wage increase of up to 13%.
In November, Genesys Hospital increased wages for nurses between 3.0% and 8.6%. Now the hospital is implementing a market premium that increases compensation by another 5%. Henry Ford Health uses market premiums to help recruit and retain nurses in rural markets like Grand Blanc and Jackson, where it operates Henry Ford Jackson Hospital. The combined wage increases are resulting in raises of up to 13% for some nurses.
With these wage increases, the average Genesys Hospital nurse will earn approximately $100,000 a year. This does not include other premiums, like overtime or holiday pay. The average annual salary for an RN in Michigan is $90,580.
Along with the 5% market premium, the hospital is also committing to new weekend, off-shift, and critical staffing pay to help ensure ideal staffing levels. After the hospital declared impasse in November, it was legally able to implement a unit-based shared governance model that gives nurses a stronger voice in decisions that impact their practice. The hospital has also agreed to maintain the same nurse-to-patient ratios that existed in the union’s previous contract.
Union leaders say they want a contract that both attracts and retains highly qualified nurses and ensures safe staffing. The contract the hospital is offering addresses those concerns by increasing below-market wages agreed to in previous contracts between Teamsters Local 332 and former hospital operators, and aligning pay and staffing practices with other Henry Ford Health hospitals, which routinely earn “A” Leapfrog safety grades.
The union’s indefinite strike will hit the 200-day mark on Friday, March 20. The parties have met approximately 85 times since contract negotiations began in April 2025, including sessions with state, federal, and private mediators.
As the Teamsters’ strike continues, the hospital remains fully operational. Data from Press Ganey, an independent company specializing in experience surveys, shows that registered nurses at Genesys Hospital reported an average job satisfaction score of 4.16 out of 5 in the fourth quarter of 2025. The average national RN satisfaction score is 3.91. Before the Teamsters strike, nurses at Genesys Hospital reported a job satisfaction score of 3.41.
