Derek J Semaan, MD

Biographical Statement

Dr. Derek Semaan, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in adult hip and knee reconstruction. He grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and attended the University of Michigan, where he majored in Economics. After college, he completed a postbaccalaureate premedical program at Harvard. He then moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he taught elementary special education and received a Master's in Education from Arizona State University. He finally returned to his alma mater to complete his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School.

Dr. Semaan remained at the University of Michigan for residency training in orthopedic surgery before traveling to Columbus, OH to complete a one-year fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement under the mentorship of world-renowned surgeons, Drs. Adolph Lombardi and Keith Berend.

Dr. Semaan joined Henry Ford Jackson in 2022, where he focuses on primary, complex, and revision total joint replacement. He specializes in direct anterior total hip replacement and minimally invasive hip and knee replacements.

Care Philosophy

I ultimately pursued a career in orthopedic surgery, and specifically joint replacement, because of the tangible difference I’m able to make in a patient’s life.

I’m genuinely invested in improving the quality of life for my patients and helping them to return to the activities they enjoy, whether it be through surgical or non-surgical interventions.
