If you have been told you have cataracts , you are not alone. Cataracts are a common part of aging, and most people will develop them at some point. Fortunately, cataract treatment has a high success rate.
When should I consider cataract surgery?
Cataracts tend to form slowly, and early on your vision may only be slightly blurred. At this stage, updating your glasses or contact lens prescription may provide temporary improvement. However, cataracts typically worsen over time.
When your vision begins to interfere with driving, daily activities or overall quality of life — or if you want to improve your current vision — cataract surgery may be recommended. Surgery has a high success rate and is the only effective treatment for cataracts.
What are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a natural part of aging, and surgery is the only effective treatment. Henry Ford has been one of the pioneers in laser-assisted cataract surgery, the most advanced procedure available.
Modern cataract surgery
Today’s cataract treatment offers several benefits, including:
- No hospitalization: Each outpatient procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes, and you can return home within a few hours.
- No general anesthesia: Anesthetic eye drops are typically used to numb the eye. Only a microscopic incision is made, which usually heals without stitches.
- Vision correction: Your natural lens is replaced with an implantable lens , designed to improve your vision.
Types of cataract surgery
Henry Ford offers two types of cataract surgery:
- Laser cataract surgery : This laser-assisted procedure uses a femtosecond laser to automate several key steps of traditional cataract surgery. It also includes advanced imaging technology for improved precision.
- Traditional cataract surgery: Your surgeon uses a technique called phacoemulsification, which applies ultrasound energy to break up and remove the cataract.
