What is the Henry Ford Comprehensive Asthma Program (HFCAP)?

The HFCAP is a clinic dedicated to treating asthma. Our doctors are asthma specialists, with experience in treating all forms and severity of asthma. The doctor you see depends on your symptoms:

  • You may see an allergist (an expert on what triggers asthma).
  • You may see a pulmonologist (a lung expert).
  • Or you may see both.

If you do not know which doctor you need to see, the type of appointment you will need will be determined when you make an appointment.

What should I expect during an appointment?

Appointments typically take 1 to 2 hours if you see one doctor, and 2 to 2 and a half hours if you see both doctors. Multiple tests can be done during your visit to identify how to best manage your asthma, and the asthma specialists may work together to provide you the best care.

During Your Clinic Visit

  • You will first complete a questionnaire for your care team to learn more about your asthma and medical history.
  • You will have a spirometry test to assess your lung function.
  • You will then see your doctor(s) who will discuss your results.
  • A skin test may be performed to identify what allergens are triggering your asthma. If you only see the pulmonologist, a skin test will not be performed.
  • Your doctor may order additional tests to complete during your visit at this time.
  • If you see both the allergist and the pulmonologist, they will work together and come up with a unified plan.
  • You will see an asthma educator nurse during your visit. You will be coached on inhaler use, allergen avoidance, asthma goals, and asthma symptom tracking.

Follow-Up:

You will be asked to setup additional virtual visits with certified asthma educators. These sessions take place over the course of a few months. They will help review how your asthma has been managed, and how you can continue to improve your symptoms.

What tests are available in the program?

  • Skin Test
This test checks your skin with small amounts of potential allergens (things that can trigger your allergies). This helps identify what you are allergic to and should avoid to help your asthma.
  • Spirometry Test
This test measures your lung function. It measures how much air your lungs can hold, and how well you are able to exhale.
  • FeNO Testing
A Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) test measures how much inflammation your lungs are experiencing. This is done by calculating how much nitric oxide is in your breath when you exhale.
  • Nasopharyngoscopy
This is a procedure that involves placing a thin flexible camera in your nose to look at your upper airway (the back of your nose). This helps to identify more factors that may impact your asthma such as inflammation, sinus issues, and nasal polyps.
  • Full PFTs
Full Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are a comprehensive list of multiple tests to assess the entire functionality of your lungs.

Please note that you may not receive all of these tests during your visit. Tests depend on your symptoms and which test are needed to give you the best care. Your doctor(s) will determine which tests are appropriate for you during your visit.
