Structural causes of intestine failure

Short bowel syndrome

Blockage or obstruction of the bowel due to:
  • hernia
  • twisted intestine (volvulus)
  • folded intestine (intussusception)
Surgical removal of part of the intestine due to:
  • tissue death (necrotizing enterocolitis)
  • inadequate blood flow to small intestine (mesenteric ischemia or thrombosis)
  • trauma to the abdomen
  • malrotation/volvulus

Functional causes of intestine failure
