Led by Dr. Tom Rifai, the Center for Metabolic Health and Weight Management formally began its program for patients in June of 2016 at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. The clinical approach is a medical platinum-standard comprehensive, time-intensive lifestyle intervention. It is designed to provide the best evidence-based odds of achieving life-saving behavior modifications and provides the best lifestyle coaching for treatment or prevention of type 2 diabetes, elevated blood pressure, cholesterol problems and overweight. The program includes topic-based support groups led by Dr. Rifai and a team of experts in providing comprehensive nutrition & food education (including cooking demonstrations), stress management skills, supervised exercise opportunities, self-monitoring skills, appropriate meal replacement tools, one-on-one metabolic physician health coach and dietitian visits, and grocery store tours. Dr. Rifai’s bio
Dr. Tom Rifai is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, double board certified in internal medicine and additionally as a Physician Nutrition Specialist. He has authored questions for the national obesity medicine certification exam as well as the culinary medicine certification exam. Rifai earned his medical degree at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. During his senior Internal Medicine residency year at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak he served as chief resident coordinator of its Nutrition, Preventive Medicine and Weight Control Center. Dr. Rifai is an online course director for Harvard Medical School's Lifestyle Medicine continuing medical education course for primary care physicians on the prevention of type 2 diabetes through behavior modifications and nutrition interventions. In 2008, Dr. Rifai served as the Associate Medical Director for the world renown Pritikin Longevity Center in Miami, Fla. Dr. Rifai is a highly sought after national speaker for continuing medical education organizations regarding nutrition, prevention of chronic disease, weight management, lifestyle interventions for the management of insulin resistance and associated type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia and overweight/obesity. He brings to the Henry Ford Health System extensive experience with thousands of metabolic patients, all in partnership with their established primary care physicians.
