Message From the Department of Medicine Chair

Welcome to the Henry Ford Medical Group’s Department of Medicine. The Henry Ford Medical Group is one of the oldest, largest, and most respected group practices in the United States. As the largest clinical department of the Henry Ford Medical Group, Medicine represents 13 subspecialties and numerous super-subspecialties, all of which provide state-of-the-art clinical care, excellence in education, and bench to bedside research. The level 1 trauma center, 803-bed Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit serves as the clinical-education-research hub of our department, where the most challenging, complex cases are referred to us for diagnosis and clinical care.

Like the diverse population of Detroit and surrounding communities, the Henry Ford Department of Medicine is comprised of physicians and scientists from the U.S. and around the world, giving us the ability to communicate with our patients in their preferred language. With the implementation of Epic at Henry Ford Health System, starting in 2012, our clinicians will be able to access electronic medical records at any of the six Henry Ford Hospitals and more than 22 medical centers across southeast Michigan. Our patients are able to access their laboratory results, request prescription refills, and make e-visit appointments securely anywhere from a computer via the MyChart e-program.

The Department of Medicine at Henry Ford has one of the oldest Internal Medicine Residency programs in the U.S., graduating thousands of physicians over the years, many of whom have or will become lauded as one of America’s “top doctors.” Henry Ford Health System ranks in the top 20% of all institutions granted funding by the NIH and U.S. Public Health Service and ranks first in Michigan for NIH-research funding for non-university based health care systems. Henry Ford Health System receives more than $55 million in annual funding from internal and outside sources. The Department of Medicine has more than $28 million in research funding annually.

With alumni of our department’s senior staff, fellows, and residents spread out across the globe, as well as many staff who remain with us over decades of service at Henry Ford, we are honored to partner with our colleagues to continually improve the care of our patients.

Stay tuned for ways to reconnect as Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford Health System make plans to celebrate 100 years of service in 2015.
