Sports Medicine Track
Goals
The Goal for the Sports Medicine Track is to provide the opportunity for enhanced instruction in the EM subspecialty of Primary Care Sports Medicine, including:
- To participate in and conduct sports medicine research that will improve the clinical care of our patients and/or educational advancement.
- Possess enhanced expertise in evaluation and management of musculoskeletal medicine and concussion; Including enhanced skills in joint injections, musculoskeletal ultrasound, Tenex, and casting/splinting.
- To extend service and leadership through engagement in activities within professional organizations/sports medicine societies.
- To participate in community engagement by supporting and working with the surrounding sports organizations in the greater Jackson area and beyond.
Requirements/conditions
- Residents can enter the longitudinal sports medicine track as a PGY-2 or PGY-3.
- A resident who opts to participate in the track must not interfere with the ability of the resident to achieve the goals and objectives of the educational program, or fulfill his/her obligations to the training program.
- Residents on concern status or probation may NOT engage in tracks.
- Residents must obtain a score of the 50th percentile on the ITE in their PGY-2 year to be accepted and continue into the track. (Conditional acceptance)
- Track involvement must be counted toward the ACGME duty hours limitations as defined by ACGME, and must not interfere with any residency responsibilities
- The track is for the duration of their residency. Failure to meet benchmarks will require additional clinical/didactic obligations to be imposed by the PD and may result in delayed matriculation.
- Upon completion of the sports medicine track the resident will get a certificate commemorating this achievement at graduation.
- The use of the resident’s elective months should be devoted to sports medicine and/or research to work on research projects as required as a PGY2-4.
- The resident’s attendance at a sports medicine-focused conference is encouraged
- On ER clinical months the resident will get 1 (one) shift deduction to allow them to spend time on their research duties or game coverage
- Scheduling should be done in a way that allows adequate game coverage without compromising the emergency medicine requirements during these months
- At any time, at the discretion of the PD, if the resident is not fulfilling the requirements and duties of the research track or of clinical/residency duties, the resident will be withdrawn from the sports medicine track.
- The requirements for each year of training (PGY specific) must be met by the resident. Failure to maintain progress may result in a need to make up time when transferring back to a non-longitudinal track.
- A total of 4 people will be accepted into the track at any given time with no more than 2 residents per PGY year accepted into the track.
