Henry Ford Hospital Opens New Women’s Heart Center

Cardiovascular Program Offers New BodPod Analysis, Monthly Support Groups in Midtown

The Henry Ford Women’s Heart Center, part of the pioneering Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Center, is now accepting patients in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood.

Henry Ford cardiologist Deirdre Mattina, M.D., and the team at the Women’s Heart Center are focused on providing life-changing support to women with heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors.

“We are addressing the specialized needs of women’s heart health, knowing heart disease is the number one killer of women, causing one in three deaths each year,” says Dr. Mattina, who hopes particularly to reach out to women in underserved populations in the greater metro Detroit area to evaluate their lifestyle, assess their risk, and come up with a plan to improve their cardiovascular health. “We want to help women minimize their risk with this accessible, doable program.”

The Lifestyle Enhancement Visit

For women with stable cardiovascular disease or cardiac risk factors who are intent on taking steps to improve their heart health, the Henry Ford Women’s Heart Center also now offers the Lifestyle Enhancement Visit. This in-depth visit includes an extensive, 2-hour evaluation and “Prescription for Health,” including:

A cardiovascular exam and in-depth discussion with Dr. Mattina

A “Bod Pod” evaluation. Guests enter the enclosed pod for a detailed body composition analysis of their fat, muscle and water weight

A treadmill stress test for fitness assessment and exercise prescription with a Henry Ford exercise physiologist

Nutrition counseling with a Henry Ford registered dietitian

An overview of findings and implementation planning with an RN Integrative Wellness Advocate and Certified Wellness Practitioner

The possibility of a free FitBit as part of participation in a Women’s Heart Center research project.

Patients are seen at the William Clay Ford Center for Athletic Medicine in Detroit's Midtown neighborhood. The cost of the Lifestyle Enhancement visit is covered by most insurance plans, Dr. Mattina adds. As always, specialized cardiovascular evaluations with Dr. Mattina are also available for women with immediate heart health issues.

WomenHeart Support Network Monthly Group Meetings

Each month, the Women’s Heart Center now also offers women the opportunity to connect with others living with heart disease who are dedicated to improving their cardiovascular health. WomenHeart meetings, held from 6 to 8 p.m. monthly at the Center for Athletic Medicine in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, offers a place for women to discuss topical issues and share tips on improving their health.

Each meeting will have a brief talk and Q & A by a healthcare professional, followed by time for group members to share ideas and experiences on living with chronic heart disease. The meetings will be facilitated by two WomenHeart Champions, Henry Ford patient survivors who will share their own stories and approaches to living with heart disease.

The new Henry Ford Women’s Health Center is supported by one of the oldest, most experienced and advanced cardiovascular programs in the nation, the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute. For an appointment, please call (313) 876-4540.
