Coolsculpting Removes Stubborn Fat Without Surgery
DETROIT – If you can still pinch an inch after endless sit-ups and flank exercises, there’s a “cool” alternative to removing stubborn, unwanted fat without surgery.
It’s called coolsculpting, a non-surgical treatment that freezes away fat using controlled cooling technology. It's offered through the Department of Dermatology at the Henry Ford Medical Center-Farmington Road, 6530 Farmington Road at Maple Road.
Henry Ford dermatologist Alison Tisack, M.D., cautions prospective patients that coolsculpting is a body contouring treatment, not a weight-loss procedure.
“The ideal candidate is someone who has pinchable fat in an area that is bothersome to them,” Dr. Tisack says. “On average, 20 to 25 percent of fat is reduced in the targeted area.”
During treatment, vacuum applicators apply cooling to the targeted area, effectively freezing fat cells. These cells are later expelled by the body naturally weeks after treatment. Patients are fully awake and often spend the time reading. A typical treatment takes about 90 minutes.
Common treatment areas are the abdomen, flanks, thighs and chin.
Dr. Tisack says patients return to their normal activities the same day after treatment. Results begin to show in about three weeks. Side effects are mild and can include itching, soreness and bruising. Pain is rare.
Coolsculpting is not covered by insurance as it is considered a cosmetic treatment. Cost begins at $750 and varies, depending on the number of treatments. Multiple treatments can be completed during one appointment. For more information, visit https://www.henryford.com/coolsculpting or call 248.661.5127.
