Dr. Akshay Khandelwal Named Board Chair for the American College of Cardiology

NEW ORLEANS — Henry Ford Cardiologist Dr. Akshay Khandelwal has been named chair of the American College of Cardiology Board of Governors and secretary of the Board of Trustees, the main governing body of the ACC, for 2019-2020.  

Dr. Khandelwal, an interventional cardiologist at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, began his term March 18, with recognition at the ACC’s 68th Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans. He will lead 66 governors from chapters representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Uniformed Services.  

“The ACC’s chapters serve as a voice of the cardiovascular community at the local level,” said Dr. Khandelwal, who sees patients at Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. “I am honored to do my part to help the cardiovascular community achieve our shared mission of transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health, not just here in the United States but around the world.”  

Since becoming a Fellow of the ACC in 2007, Dr. Khandelwal has been an active member throughout his career at the state, national and international level. He led the Michigan Chapter of the ACC as governor during 2018, after serving in various roles for the state-wide organization of cardiologists. He’s served on the membership and steering committees, the executive board and board of trustees for national ACC. He also co-authored several chapters on reperfusion therapies for ACC educational products for other cardiologists.  

Dr. Khandelwal specializes in transradial/complex percutaneous coronary intervention and serves as the associate division head of cardiology. Within the Henry Ford Medical Group, he is a member of HFMG Operations Council, HFMG BOG Population Health Committee and the Henry Ford Physicians Network Clinical Integration Committee, among others. He is also the Chair of the HFMG BOG Finance Committee. Additionally, he chairs the state of Michigan's STEMI Systems of Care Taskforce.    

Upon graduating from Bangalore University in 1998, Dr. Khandelwal completed his internal medicine residency, chief residency, general cardiology fellowship and interventional cardiology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology.
