Classic Children’s Book Inspires Halloween Costumes for Tiny Patients
DETROIT-- Babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit are a Halloween treat! They’re dressed as fruits, vegetables and sweets in photos currently appearing on Henry Ford Health social media.
Henry Ford team members encourage families and visitors to read to the babies during their stay in the NICU, so the costumes were inspired by the classic children’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Nurses dressed the hospital’s tiniest patients as an apple, a strawberry, a pear, a slice of cherry pie and more—all inspired by the caterpillar’s famous feast.
The Halloween photo shoot is a beloved tradition in the Henry Ford Hospital NICU. One of the nurses’ moms made the costumes. Each baby’s family gets to take their costume home as a keepsake of the little one’s first Halloween.
