DETROIT – Henry Ford Medical Group, part of Henry Ford Health and one of the nation’s largest and most experienced group practices, today announced the appointment of Dr. Deepak Prabhakar as the new Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, effective June 10, 2024. Dr. Prabhakar, a renowned figure in the field of psychiatry, takes the helm from Dr. Cathy Frank, who has led the department with exceptional dedication and insight for more than seven years.
Dr. Prabhakar brings to the role a wealth of experience and a comprehensive background in mental health care, education, and administration. Previously, Dr. Prabhakar served as the Chief of Medical Staff at Sheppard Pratt, the nation’s largest private, non-profit provider of mental health, substance use, special education, developmental disability, and social services. His work there, combined with his previous tenure at Henry Ford Health, has equipped him with unique insights and skills to lead the department and behavioral services into its next chapter.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Prabhakar back to Henry Ford in this new capacity,” said Dr. Steven Kalkanis, CEO of Henry Ford Medical Group. “His innovative approach to mental health care, combined with his dedication to teaching and patient advocacy, aligns perfectly with our mission and values. We are also profoundly grateful to Dr. Frank for her years of service, during which she spearheaded numerous initiatives to improve patient care and fostered an environment of learning and innovation.”

Throughout Dr. Prabhakar’s distinguished career, he has been committed to integrating mental health services with overall healthcare, reducing healthcare disparities, fostering a collaborative and healthy environment for healthcare workers, and promoting compassionate care for patients and families. He has been recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to sports psychiatry and his research into suicide, health disparities, and healthcare worker distress.

“I am honored for the opportunity to lead the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Henry Ford Health,” said Dr. Prabhakar. “I look forward to working with our talented team to enhance our services and continue providing compassionate, comprehensive care to our patients. Together, we will strive to meet the evolving needs of our community and set new standards in mental health care.”

In his new position, Dr. Prabhakar will build upon the department’s strong foundation. He plans to introduce innovative treatment programs, emphasize continuous improvement, expand access to mental health services, and continue the department's tradition of excellence in education and research.

Dr. Prabhakar’s leadership comes at a critical time when mental health services are in high demand. His vision for the future of the department includes expanding digital health services, enhancing community outreach programs, and fostering a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
