Biography

Plastic Surgery

A graduate of Purdue Unversity in 1979 and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982, Dr. Houin completed his General Surgery residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in 1987 and his fellowship training in Plastic Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1989. He joined the Henry Ford Medical Group’s Division of Plastic Surgery at the Henry Ford Health System where he has practiced since 1989. Dr. Houin is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

While the precision and technical challenges of microsurgery initially led Dr. Houin to pursue a medical career in plastic surgery, it is the artistry of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and the ability to help his patients feel appreciative for the results that continues to make his practice professionally and personally satisfying.

Dr. Houin has received numerous awards throughout his career, including:

Physician’s Recognition Award from the American Medical Association in 1993
Outstanding Young Man in America in 1998
Consumer’s Guide to Top Doctors
The Best Doctors in America: Midwest Region (Woodward White, Inc.)  1999 and 2008
Hour Detroit's Top Docs 2003 and 2009
Metro Detroit's Best Doctors 2008
Dr. Houin is a member of the American Society of Plastic & Reconstruction Surgeons, the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, as well as local medical associations such as the Michigan State Medical Society. He has been a Reviewing Editor for the Journal of Trauma since 2001, and is a published author of numerous articles and book chapters.

Philosophy
To treat my patients with the respect and care I want for my own family

I enjoy caring for my patients and educating them about the options they have with each of their plastic surgery issues. These important consultation discussions help patients to understand their personal medical situation and to make better, informed cosmetic surgery choices. I encourage my patients to ask questions and always welcome lists of items and issues to discuss.

I always try to see surgical situations from my patient’s perspective. I was brought up in a small town where everyone talks to each other, and that makes it easy for me to relate to my patients. I want to be sure my patients are comfortable with me as their surgeon and the decisions we need to make together. I want all my patients to feel like they are being treated like I would want my family treated. I especially want my patients to feel better about themselves when I am done, whether the procedure is a chemical peel for facial wrinkles, the facelift they have sought for years or the replantation of severed fingers from a traumatic hand accident.

Awards, Honors and Publications
Herman P. Houin, M.D., has performed thousands of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeries for women and men. As a renowned plastic surgeon with more than 20 years of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery experience at Henry Ford Health System, Dr. Houin’s practice regularly includes patients seeking his expertise for facelifts, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty), body shaping liposuction, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and reconstructive breast surgery.

Many patients seek care from Dr. Houin for breast reduction because of the minimal scar liposuction techniques he has used for many years. Reconstructive breast surgery is a large part of Dr. Houin’s practice as he carries the expertise to perform mastectomy with breast reconstruction at the same time or in separate surgeries, depending on what is medically best for each breast cancer patient and each patient’s surgical preference.

Dr. Houin’s cosmetic surgery expertise also includes less invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox, chemical peels, skin filler injections, microdermabrasion, sclerotherapy for varicose veins, as well as other minor surgeries.

No matter what type of cosmetic surgery, Dr. Houin’s artistic and technical surgical skills coupled with experienced, sound medical judgment have served to achieve consistently excellent results for his patients.
