Living Fully and Lifting Others Up After a Stage 4 Breast Cancer Diagnosis

At just 38 years old, Arnita Brown vividly remembers the night that changed her life forever.

“My breast cancer journey began in the most unexpected way — I was asleep when a sharp pain in my left breast woke me up,” she recalls. “I reached over, grabbed the area, and at that moment I knew something was wrong. That single moment changed the entire course of my life.”

The Southfield resident, who cherishes the support of her close-knit family, including her husband, son and granddaughter, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017. When she learned the disease had metastasized and was classified as stage 4, her first reaction was disbelief.

“I remember thinking, ‘How is this happening to me? I’m too young for this.’ Then almost immediately, my mind went to my family. I wondered what this would mean for them, how they would handle it, and whether I would be here to watch my son grow into the man he is today,” she says.

“There was fear, of course — fear of the unknown, fear of the treatments, fear of what my life would look like,” she adds. “But there was also a moment of clarity. I told myself, ‘Okay, Arnita, this is real. Now you must fight.’”

Arnita, who built a successful career with Chrysler/Stellantis, serving in both union and management roles, says that experience helped shape her leadership style and deepened her commitment to accountability, compassion and service. Today, she channels that passion into community-focused work, including her role as a patient advocate at Henry Ford Health, where she helps others navigate their own healthcare journeys.

A dedicated care team through every step of her 9-year journey

Since being diagnosed in 2017 Arnita says she feels blessed that she has been treated by an incredible all women care team at Henry Ford Health including Dr. Vrushali Dabak, medical oncologist, Sarah Lozon, NP, Dr. Madhulata Reddy, cardiologist, Dr. Dunya Atisha, plastic and reconstructive surgeon and Dr. Eleanor Walker, radiation oncologist. “Each of them has played a vital role in my journey, guiding me through some of the hardest moments of my life with compassion, expertise, and unwavering support.”

Dr. Dabak explains despite understandably being overwhelmed with a stage 4 diagnosis Arnita, with the help of her husband, always by her side, was able to stay focused on getting the necessary treatments to keep the disease under control while also having some breaks from therapy so she could enjoy time with family and friends.

“She asks all the right questions to understand her disease situation and has given her best to fight this cancer while being her own advocate and a partner in keeping her cancer under control,” says Dr. Dabak. “Ms. Brown has worked through most therapies and has been positive all the time while continuing to encourage, lead and help others in the fight against breast cancer.

Finding strength through self-advocacy

As a long-term survivor living with metastatic breast cancer, Arnita says one of the things she values most is having a care team that listens to her concerns, explains her options and includes her in decisions about her treatment. She also believes self-advocacy is essential.

Living with stage 4 cancer means you can’t afford to be silent. You must speak up, ask questions and make sure your voice is part of every decision,” Arnita says. “And if you can’t advocate for yourself, you need someone who can speak on your behalf. The care is good, but your voice is still your most powerful tool.

For those newly diagnosed, Arnita encourages taking things one day at a time and celebrating every victory, no matter how small.

“Remember, this diagnosis may change your life,” she says. “But it does not take away your purpose. You can still live, still love, still laugh and still find joy.
