Every year, about 500,000 men in the U.S. choose to have a vasectomy (male sterilization surgery). A small number (between 5 and 7 percent) change their minds at some point after the surgery. You may be among them.
If you’ve had a vasectomy for birth control, you could want to reverse it for any number of reasons. You may be in a new relationship or want to expand your family. Whatever the reason for your decision, our experts at the Henry Ford Men’s Health Center can help. We successfully restore fertility potential to nearly all of our vasectomy reversal patients.
How vasectomy reversal works
In a vasectomy, the surgeon cuts and seals off the ends of the tube (vas deferens) through which sperm move from the testicles into the semen. After surgery, your testicles continue to produce sperm but it’s absorbed by your body, not released into semen.
The goal of a vasectomy reversal is to reconnect the cut ends of the vas deferens. When surgery is successful, sperm can again leave the testicles and mix with semen.
