Patient Engagement in Research Scale Enhanced by Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Acceptance, and Safety (PEIR-IDEAS)
-
How was the validation completed?Validation of the PEIR-IDEAS was completed at Henry Ford Health’s Patient Engaged Research Center, with patients serving as full partners throughout the research process. Patients, health literacy experts, researchers and community members who engage patients in their work collectively contributed to the PEIR-IDEAS. Psychometric testing of the scale was completed with a diverse group of patients and caregivers to ensure generalizability and accessibility.
-
Who should use the PEIR-IDEAS?
The PEIR-IDEAS is designed to be administered to patients and caregivers. It serves as a resource for those seeking a quantitative measure of meaningful patient engagement in their projects. It provides a practical way to assess and strengthen engagement practices, advancing equity and shared leadership in research.
-
How can we administer the PEIR-IDEAS?
PEIR-IDEAS Scale can be distributed through digital survey platforms like REDCap, Qualtrics, MS Forms, or Google Forms.
Keep the following points in mind:
- Respondents often appreciate the ability to navigate back to previous questions to review, modify, or add to their answers. It’s important that a clearly visible back button is available within the survey interface.
- Choose a platform that is accessible to all users, including those with different abilities, and provide accommodations if needed.
- Ensure the platform is optimized for use on mobile devices.
- Number the questions so they can be easily referenced.
- Respondents also like to know an estimated time for completion before starting the survey.
- Respondents should spend at least 2 minutes completing the scale to ensure thoughtful responses.
