Research Congresses

The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology is a world leader in facilitating collaborative eye research.

The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology sponsors two international research congresses, each of which assembles more than 30 of the world’s leading scientists in Detroit for three days. These programs have proven that collegiality facilitates collaboration, and ultimately moves research forward at a faster rate. By creating these innovative research networks and providing a venue for scientists to collaborate, the DIO is working to solve some of the most pressing issues in vision-related research.

The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology sponsors two research congresses:

  • The Eye, The Brain & The Auto: This program is dedicated to improving our understanding of the relationship between vision and the safe operation of motor vehicles, in an attempt to reduce the number of highway fatalities.
  • The Eye and The Chip: This program seeks to marry the most recent advances in nanoelectronics and neurobiology to provide artificial vision to many people who are now blind as a result of many eye conditions, diseases and injuries.

Format and awards

Each research congress features a panel of more than 30 leading experts from around the world. Each of the invited panel speakers gives a 20-minute presentation, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer period.

In addition, at each world congress, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology presents the Bartimaeus Award to an investigator who has distinguished himself or herself by prolonged substantial contributions to the progress in their field.

Program funding

Each research congress is funded by contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and from a portion of proceeds from its fundraising events – EyesOn Design car show and associated events, and EyesOn Design Awards at the North American International Auto Show,
