Research & Services

The Patient Engaged Research Center (PERC) is a team of experts in patient engagement and qualitative research design and methodology. PERC partners with researchers, healthcare teams, patients, and caregivers to ensure the patient voice is meaningfully integrated into research and healthcare improvement efforts. The team supports three primary areas: grant application and Letter of Intent (LOI) development, facilitation of funded research projects, and quality improvement initiatives. PERC provides expertise in qualitative study design, data collection, analysis, and dissemination, while also supporting patient engagement through the Patient Advisor Program by connecting research and clinical teams with trained Patient Advisors who contribute lived experience and valuable feedback throughout the project process.

PERC Collaboration Services

  • Focus Groups and/or Interviews
PERC facilitates both focus groups and one on one interviews to gather meaningful feedback, experiences, and perspectives from patients, caregivers, and other participants. We can help co develop moderator or interview guides tailored to your project goals and research questions. PERC also supports session facilitation, audio recording, transcription, and qualitative data organization to help research and quality improvement teams better understand participant experiences and insights.
  • Recruitment
The Patient Advisor Pool includes nearly 400 engaged patients and caregivers used for a wide range of engagement activities. If specific populations are not represented, PERC can support external recruitment, including developing materials, conducting outreach, and coordinating interviews or focus groups.
  • Surveys
Qualitative surveys are a great tool for gathering quick and meaningful feedback from Patient Advisors and/or participant groups identified by the study team. PERC can co-develop patient centered survey questions, with an emphasis on open-ended qualitative responses that capture experiences, perspectives, and insights in participants’ own words. We also support survey distribution to target audiences and provide organized response summaries and results for research and quality improvement teams.
  • Qualitative Data Analysis
PERC provides qualitative data analysis services tailored to the goals and needs of each project. Our team can conduct both preliminary analyses focused on early insights and directional feedback, as well as full qualitative analyses using rigorous qualitative research methods appropriate for manuscripts, presentations, and formal reporting. Depending on project needs, analysis services may include data familiarization, coding, theme development, interpretation, and reporting supported by participant quotes and detailed findings. These services help research and quality improvement teams better understand participant experiences, perspectives, and key areas for action.
  • Patient Centered Research Design
Research studies are designed to increase collaborative efforts between researchers and the participants (patients). Engagement, knowledge exchange and dissemination, as well as action and reflection are key components of these types of designs. Examples include: photo-voice, body-mapping, social network analysis, social media analysis, community-academic partnerships, participatory action research. ERC can assist with all aspects of study design and execution, including patient engagement planning, qualitative methodology, data collection, analysis, and dissemination strategies. Our team also has experience developing and supporting successful patient engaged research proposals, including projects funded through the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
  • Knowledge Sharing and Dissemination
Supports the strategic exchange and translation of knowledge across stakeholders, communities, and research teams. Can include the development of publications and abstracts, as well as the planning and facilitation of knowledge sharing opportunities such as galleries, lunch and learns, and symposiums.
