Vikas and Arjun Gumber, Information Technology and Government Employee, Laser Vision Correction Patient
Whether they were at school, at home or on the basketball court, Vikas and Arjun Gumber have done everything together their whole lives. Their close-knit bond even managed to make its way to their eyesight. Both Vikas and Arjun struggled with poor vision for many years, leaving them to rely heavily on glasses and contacts starting in childhood.
“Growing up, we played sports and did different activities together and wearing contacts or glasses always really got in the way,” said Vikas. “I even had an issue with contacts two years ago that messed up my eyes badly and that’s when I started to look into LASIK even further. But, we were both told that our vision changes needed to stabilize before we could get it done.”
One day, Vikas, an employee at Henry Ford Health, saw an email that announced a discount on LASIK eye surgery for Henry Ford employees and their family members. He called his brother, Arjun, and suggested they get it done together – as they had done everything else.
Pushing through nerves
“I was definitely nervous about the procedure before meeting for my consultation, but the team was so nice and made me feel so comfortable. I remember talking with my brother afterward and said ‘Dude, they’re awesome!’” said Arjun.
“After having the consultation for LASIK, I totally agreed with my brother. Everyone at the office was so welcoming and friendly, almost to where I thought ‘what’s the catch?’ They were just so nice and helpful. It made me want to get LASIK done even more,” said Vikas.
On September 5th, 2024, both Vikas and Arjun got LASIK done by Dr. Kevin Everett. “It was a great idea for Vikas and Arjun to have the procedure done on the same day. LASIK usually takes about 15 minutes, so patients are in and out of the office pretty quickly,” said Dr. Everett.
“During the LASIK procedure, what we’re trying to do is reshape the cornea. I use one laser to create a flap on the cornea, and then use a second laser to reshape the cornea. By flattening the cornea and removing that tissue, the eye bends less light and the patient can see better. Then, all I do is lay the flap back down. The first day, patients might notice their eyes are teary, red or a little blurry. But, I advise them to go home and sleep for a few hours so their eyes can stay closed and start healing. They should be back to normal within the next day or two,” noted Dr. Everett.
A new outlook
Vikas and Arjun agreed that being able to wake up in the morning and automatically be able to see has been a significant relief and change to their lives. “The procedure was really easy, and we were both able to see the next day. What was awesome was that Dr. Everett and his staff checked up on us both right away to make sure everything was healing well. It wasn’t as if we got LASIK done and just never heard from them again. They were so nice and friendly to us,” said Vikas.
“Vikas and Arjun were great candidates for LASIK because they both had healthy eyes, regular corneas, and didn’t have too high of a vision correction. They both didn’t want to wear contacts anymore and their vision changes had been stable for a while. These two were another couple of great LASIK success stories,” remarked Dr. Everett.
Today, Vikas and Arjun are enjoying their new, glasses-free, contact lens-free lives, thanks to the skilled team at Henry Ford Health. “We couldn’t be happier with our decision,” they agreed. “LASIK has truly changed our lives for the better.”
